MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES SOLIDARITY WEEKS: AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL LUXEMBOURG ON THE STATUS OF REFUGEE

Le cercle international d’étudiants au Luxembourg is inviting you for a series of events around the topic of refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants from April 10th to April 30th.

Unbeknownst to the majority of European citizens, human rights are being abused in the backyard of ‘fortress Europe’. Displaying itself as the beacon of civilization and proud Nobel peace prize laureate the internal policies of the European Union however do not do justice to this pretentious facade.

Portrayed as threats, criminals, scroungers refugees are being stigmatized and abused on a constant basis. Rarely are the individual fates paid attention to, often are the reasons for their demands for asylum disregarded.

This becomes all the more evident during periods of crisis and uncertainty, as the case of Greece demonstrates for instance. Greek activist Joanna Tsoni will be commenting on the situation in Greece where the current economic crisis has led to the rise of right wing extremism directly affecting the lives of immigrants.

But also in Luxembourg are refugees treated as second class citizens. The ‘Campagne contre le centre fermé’ has formed to fight these injustices. On April 16th the campaign will specify the immigration policies of the Grand Duchy.

On the 24th, Amnesty International Luxembourg will give a more general talk on the status of refugees in international law and the right of asylum and will on that occasion present their new related campaign.

In order to raise awareness of the precarious situation of refugees and show solidarity with them we cordially invite you to our lectures, film screenings, presentation and photo exhibition.
