My Body My Rights, Amnesty International’s global campaign to stop the control and criminalization of sexuality and reproduction by governments

We all have the right to make decisions about our own health, body, sexuality and reproductive life, without fear, coercion, violence or discrimination. But all over the world, people’s freedom to make these decisions is controlled by the state, medical professionals, even their own families. Criminal law and punitive sanctions are frequently used to control such choices, and many people are prevented from making any choice at all.   Rada Tzaneva will present My Body My Rights, Amnesty International’s global campaign to stop the control and criminalization of sexuality and reproduction by governments and others, and will discuss the challenges to campaigning for sexual and reproductive rights. Rada Tzaneva is a researcher and policy advisor on gender at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International in London. She has also worked on Amnesty International’s global campaigns on violence against women, and poverty and human rights.   Ciara O’Connell is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Law Department at the University of Sussex (UK). Her research focuses on implementation of women’s reproductive rights in the Inter-American System of Human Rights. Ciara ‘s talk reflects on the relationship between economic, social and cultural rights and reproductive rights. It does so by exploring reproductive rights challenges and advancements in different contexts, such as Europe and Latin America, and takes into consideration the role of religion as well as legal positions relating to gender and health. Ciara was a visiting scholar at the Centre for International Governance and Justice (ANU), and the International Institute for the Sociology of Law (Oñati, Spain). Her work on reproductive health rights litigation has been published in Health and Human Rights and the Inter-American and European Human Rights Journal.
